The southern coast of Hvar Island: what to explore and see

It’s difficult to single out one area of the island that is particularly beautiful, but if I really had to choose, it would be the southern coast of Hvar Island.

Therefore, with this short guide, you can plan a day trip that you can easily complete in one day, and all you need is a car or scooter. To begin, we’ll leave the beaches for now, although they are the most beautiful on the island, and start by passing through the old tunnel, which is a tourist attraction in itself.

Driving through picturesque villages of the UNESCO world heritage

Before heading to the always sunny southern side of the island, plan your journey through the villages of Vrbanj-Vrisnik-Svirče-Pitve. It’s best to drive this route from Stari Grad and take the old road through these charming villages where time seems to stand still. If you follow this exact direction and route, you will be amazed by Vrisnik with its charming hillside houses and the beautiful village of Pitve nestled at the foot of the rocky massif. Recommendations for good food are the beloved taverns Vrisnik in Vrisnik and Bogo in Vrbanj. In Pitve, there is also a fantastic restaurant we like to visit, Dvor Duboković.

Do you know where the only traffic light on the island is?

Technically, this is a tunnel, but it looks more like a bear’s den. It connects Pitve with the nearest place on the southern side, Zavala, or as the locals call it, Plaža (the Beach). Logically – because beaches, along with excellent locations for growing Plavac Mali grapes, dominate this part of the island. One-way and unlit, this tunnel is a real tourist attraction and hides an interesting secret. I’m sure it will add some extra sugar & spice to your journey towards the beautiful southern beaches of Hvar Island.

The most romantic spot on the island

Do you have a ring that needs to be presented to your significant other half? We have a location where you should do it. Veli Kamik in Sv. Nedelja is potentially the most beautiful place on the island for a romantic proposal. It’s a place where you can just come and admire how beautiful life is, but imagine saying THE QUESTIOIN under a small tree at the end of the road, jutting out into the blue sea, and an orange sunball sinking into the water right in front of you. Can it get any better? I thnk not, but please, do let me know how the proposal went out.

Complete your trip with a dinner at the Tamaris restaurant in Sv. Nedelja, or by tasting wines at the Zlatan Otok winery at their Bilo Idro restaurant. If you’re more of a sports enthusiast, join the Cliffbase team and experience climbing on the most perfect via ferrata EVER. If you have a powerful vehicle, head further from Sv. Nedelja towards Hvar on a gravel road. You’ll be guaranteed to witness the most breathtaking view of the sea you’ve ever seen in your life. I can imagine you won’t be able to stop admiring it, as it’s quite evident. Until next time, farewell and best wishes!

Love, M.
