History forever preserved in space: Odysseus’ cave

The outstanding beauty of the island of Hvar is evident in its hidden gems, and one such place is Humac, a small eco-ethno village located on the western part of the island. Humac is a captivating example of a peaceful rural settlement with traditional architecture, surrounded by stunning nature However, one of the most exciting attractions to visit near Humac is Grapčeva Cave. It is the place where Odysseus battled the Cyclops, and where the oldest depiction of an ancient vessel in Europe was found. Tru story, bro.

This spectacular cave is located on a hill not far from the village, offering magnificent views of Šćedro, Korčula, and Vis, and on clear winter days, the highest peak of Italy can be seen on the horizon. Grapčeva Cave is one of the oldest archaeological sites of Hvar’s culture and civilization.

After visiting Grapčeva Cave, it would be a good idea to rest and have a bite to eat because you’re almost in the middle of the island. A perfect place for that is to indulge in the local gastronomy at the konoba (tavern) in Humac Additionally, you can head back through Zastražišće and make a stop at the Grgo Lučić family farm, where you can explore the fascinating world of authentic island products such as soap and essential oils made from lavender, immortelle, and other plants from the island of Hvar. The best time to visit is during the month of July when lavender is in full bloom, one of the most beautiful plants on the island.
