Ten magical beach locations on island Hvar that offer perfect tranquility

To find the best beaches on the island of Hvar, we have combed every inch, carefully considered different needs, and compiled a list of the most perfect beaches, each uniquely special in its own way. We must admit that we won’t reveal everything from our list here, as some places are jealously guarded to maintain their untouched and wild nature. Additionally, it’s wonderful to explore on your own because you never know which heavenly cove awaits you beneath the vineyards, down the gorge, and straight to the sea. Fortunately, the island of Hvar is abundant with stunning and hidden locations, so we feel free to share our unique list of magical beaches on the island of Hvar.

Beach Grebišće – Čorni Petar

Beach Čorni Petar is located in the Grebišće bay, one of the few sandy bays on the island. Just next to the sandy beach, towards Sućuraj, hidden beneath a dense pine forest at the very top of a protruding sea ridge, you’ll find beach Čorni Petar. This is not the typical beach you would expect, but a perfect oasis of intimacy and island life, one of the last places on the island that still cherishes the slow pace of summer enjoyment. Here, summer feels different, with muted hues of the sun filtering through the dense forest and a constant gentle breeze always present The beach area is rocky, yet sufficiently flat for stretching out comfortably, and the entry into the sea is perfect. If you take a short walk further down the rocky coast, you can find your own nudist spot, and since this part of the beach protrudes into the sea and faces northwest, it enjoys abundant sunshine for a long time. The beach also features a small wooden pontoon that children often use as a diving platform. Bar Čorni Petar works during the season, usually mid June till end September from 13h. Do check their socials for detailed infromation.

Islet Zečevo – Lantina beach

The counterpart to Čorni Petar, a slightly more modern version with almost the same sense of sweet carefreeness, can be found on the islet of Zečevo, near Jelsa and Vrboska. The boat ride takes about ten minutes, and when you arrive, you will be amazed by the nature of this place. Here, the sea takes on all colors of the spectrum; it is perfectly clear and slightly cooler due to underwater springs that occasionally emerge. Sea urchins are everywhere, which is a sign of an impeccably clean underwater environment, so be careful where you step

Once a favorite gathering spot for naturists and nature lovers, today this place is a haven for families and young couples seeking relaxation. A dense pine forest conceals a modernly designed restaurant and beach bars with cabanas and sun loungers, and the beach in front of them serves as an ideal shallow natural pool for young visitors. The bay is also a favorite among sailors since it is sheltered from all winds except the south. In the case of strong southerly winds, we recommend relocating to an eastward-oriented bay, such as the neighboring Soline.

Pokrivenik Bay

Located on the northern side of the island, between the villages of Poljica and Zastražišće, you will find the bay of Pokrivenik. Enclosed by high cliffs and dense green macchia, this deep cove hides a large pebble beach, perfect for an authentic Robinson Crusoe-style getaway. Since it is sufficiently distant from the main tourist destinations like Hvar, Jelsa, and Vrboska, this beach is a favorite among locals who often seek an escape from the summer crowds. You can plan a full-day getaway here since the cove also features a harbor for boats, making it convenient for boating enthusiasts to visit.

It also boasts a restaurant where you can enjoy authentic homemade food. To nautical enthusiasts, this bay will be perfect as it is quite protected due to its depth, but it is still open to the bura wind. Therefore, we recommend seeking some more western bays like Zečevo or Soline. The beach is also accessible by car.

PS: Pokrivenik is one of the magical places for sports climbing on the island, with a beautiful cave that can be reached on foot from the cove located on the western side.

Mala Stiniva: Fjord Of Island Hvar

Blue Lagoon or fjord of Hvar Island, the beautiful Mala Stiniva beach, is also located on the northern side and is probably one of the most interesting places you will visit. For the best experience of Mala Stiniva, it is advisable to arrive by boat, although it is possible to access it by car and then take a small narrow path to the heavenly Lučica – a secluded cove right next to Mala Stiniva. This place offers a small pebble beach with a beautiful abandoned fishing house. The deep sea with its unique shades of blue and the rocks rising high above the surface make it perfect for cliff jumping. In this cove, the sun sets quickly due to the high rocky cliffs, so it’s best to plan your visit during the morning hours and try to avoid the winds (when with boat) that can make the return journey home challenging in the early afternoon.

PS: Don’t mix up Hvar’s Stinive – we have three of them. All three Stinive coves are pebble beaches, completely natural, and located on the northern side of the island. However, the most special one is near the village of Poljica in the middle of the island. When talking about Stiniva, the one on the island of Vis is apsolutley divine, but unfortunately, due to its beauty, it has become a popular destination and can often be overcrowded with people and boats. In such cases, you might consider visiting other hidden coves or lesser-known beaches on the island to avoid the crowds and enjoy peace and tranquility. Such as amazing Veli Budikovac islet near Vis. Just an idea if you’re up to island hopping.

Gromin Dolac beaches

The sandy beaches on the southern side of the island are the most beautiful beaches on Hvar. I must admit, we are so spoiled that we choose beaches based on the fineness of the pebbles, and here you can find the highest concentration of beaches with exactly such pebbles – large enough for comfortable lying, and perfectly small so as not to hurt your bare feet. Gromin Dolac is a small village located east of Zavala, with just a few houses. To reach the numerous beaches separated from you by fields of beautifully arranged vineyards, immortelle, and lavender, you can get there by boat or car from Zavala. You can safely park cars, motorcycles, or quads at several spots along the dirt road, just be mindful to leave enough space for other vehicles to pass. These are true Robinson Crusoe-like beaches – no bars, no crowds, and the beautiful view, gentle breeze make them ideal for adventurers and young couples seeking intimacy.

Sv. Nedilja – Jagodna Beach

Jedna od plaža koja će vam sigurno ostati u sjećanju je plaža Jagodna, smještena između Sv. Nedelje i Ivan Dolca. This beautiful pebble oasis is perfect for both children and adults, surrounded by red cliffs and basked in sunlight. The sea is exceptionally clean and ideal for snorkeling, while the afternoon wind often creates fun for kids, swirling the waves on the pebble beach. The dense pine forest just above the beach will provide you with pleasant shade, although you should be aware that the chirping of crickets will lull you to sleep, no matter how well-rested you may feel. Hvar has that effect on people, and we’re aware of it – but you’ll only truly experience it firsthand. Perhaps it would be ideal to mention the northern Jagodna, near Hvar (Lozna Cove) – the view you’ll experience while driving there is otherworldly. I won’t describe it; you should see it for yourself.

Ždrilca i Palmižana – Pakleni Islands

It is difficult to single out just one beach on the Paklinski Islands as the best. The archipelago offers a variety of beautiful beaches. Crystal-clear waters, top-notch beach bars and restaurants with five-star gastronomy, ACI marina, art galleries, and arboretum – all of these make the Pakleni Islands a unique destination in the Adriatic. Nevertheless, two locations stand out a bit from the rest – the Mlini beach in the Ždrilca bay on the island of Marinkovac, and Vinogradišće bay, better known as Palmižana, on the neighboring island of Sv. Klement. These picturesque coves are supernaturally beautiful, with crystal-clear waters of eclectic blue shades, and a large number of restaurants and bars.

PS: If you choose the Mlini beach, be sure to take a short walk to beach bars Mamato or Tri Grede for lunch; they are excellent. If you have decided on Palmižana, don’t miss the unique Laganini beach bar (make sure to reserve a table in advance). One of the most famous and luxurious restaurants on the island, Zori Timeless, is also located right here on Palmižana.

You can see that I haven’t mentioned one of the most popular beaches – Dubovica. There are several reasons for this – it’s overly crowded, not easily accessible, and lacks parking space. There are much more beautiful and easily accessible places (with far fewer people) than Dubovica, and you’ll find them along the stretch from Milna to Gromin Dolac. Explore a bit, you’ll love them. Here’s a short list – Eva Beach, Ivan Dolac (off the main beach, on your left), Jagodna, Petarčica, Skalinada, Zavala Beaches, and Sćedro islet beaches.

The bays of Gdinj Zastražišće, and Brusje are not on the list because it’s challenging to single out just one or two of these beautiful places. Exploring these bays during a visit to Hvar will provide a unique and memorable experience.
