You might not have thought of it, as Hvar is synonymous with sea, sun, and a hedonistic vacation. To prove it, we will introduce you to the Hvar via ferrata, which is unique in its location and the experience it offers to visitors. If you haven’t encountered the term “via ferrata” before, it comes from the Italian language and literally means “iron path.” In short, you climb with the help of special mountaineering equipment, secured by a steel cable that is safely attached to the rock. The Hvar via ferrata is located on the southern side of the island.
From the sea to the highest peaks – via ferrata on the island of Hvar
These via ferratas are the result of the hard work of the island’s Slovakian resident Miro Štreca and his team of enthusiasts from Cliffbase. They extend high above the sea in the small village of Sv. Nedelja. During the ascent to the via ferratas, you will be treated to breathtaking views of magnificent vineyard terraces, sun-drenched olive groves, and, with a bit of luck, the yellow bushes of fragrant immortelle. To traverse the via ferratas, you will need special equipment that you can rent from the Cliffbase team. A narrow bridge, reminiscent of Jurassic Park, spans between two cliffs, connecting three currently existing via ferratas. You will also have the opportunity to visit the unique Augustinian monastery in the cave of St. Nedelja.
The most challenging and, in many ways, magnificent via ferrata is the Via Mirko, a vertical ascent along a cliff to the summit of the island. This via ferrata offers a thrilling and exhilarating experience as you make your way up the gorge, navigating steep walls and breathtaking heights
