Discover Little Venice on Hvar

Vrboska, a picturesque fishing village, is one of the hidden gems of the island of Hvar. This small place, nestled in a deep narrow bay, exudes tradition and a relaxed atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for those who want to experience laid-back island life.

One of the most striking features of Vrboska is its appearance. Situated on the eastern coast of the island of Hvar, it is known for its unique architecture. A small canal flows through the village, reminiscent of miniature Venetian canals, which is why Vrboska is often referred to as “Little Venice.” Bridges cross over the canal, connecting picturesque streets and houses built in the traditional Dalmatian style.

In the heart of Vrboska, you will find a beautiful church-fortress that you can visit, which is one of the iconic symbols of the place. This intriguing church-fortress was built in the 16th century and its unique architecture always captures attention.

In the past, Vrboska held great importance for the island, as the largest sardine factory in the former country was established here, providing sustenance for the entire island. Today, only the walls of the factory remain in a dilapidated state. However, a new fishing museum, showcasing the history of salted fish on Hvar, is being constructed on the shores of the narrow bay.

One of the best ways to experience Vrboska is to explore its beautiful beaches and coves. Soline Bay, Glavice Peninsula, and Basina Bay are just some of the hidden oases that can be explored. You can relax on pebble or rocky beaches, choose accommodation at the unique Plagee Cachee glamping site nestled in a dense pine forest, or simply enjoy the picturesque views of the nearby Zečevo islet.

Vrboska is an ideal destination for a family vacation, cycling, and seaside walks. I will also mention the windsurfing school for both kids and adults that has been keeping smiles on faces here for years. There are also two top-notch wineries that you must visit – Carić Wines and Pinjata Winery & Tavern.
